Sustainable HPC & Waste Heat Recovery

Qarnot partners with RackRenew to deliver circular compute solutions that combine second-life OCP infrastructure with liquid cooling and heat recovery technology. Their Brescia deployment, the first of its kind in Italy, proves that remanufactured servers can run mission-critical HPC workloads while simultaneously decarbonizing a city’s heating network.

Brescia, Italy: Qarnot deployed liquid-cooled pods with RackRenew’s OCP servers, with a Phase 2 target (A2A) of heat for 1,350 apartments, 3,500 tonnes of CO₂ avoided annually and 16 GWh per year of thermal output. Phase 1, operating today, delivers roughly 800 MWh per year.

AMI

Firmware & BMC

OpenBMC Firmware & Platform Security

RackRenew partners with AMI on firmware. AMI, founded in 1985 as American Megatrends, develops the BIOS, UEFI, and baseboard management controller firmware that runs on servers across much of the industry; its MegaRAC line is the BMC software behind many vendors’ management consoles. Bryce Canyon ships with the stock OpenBMC firmware Meta published for the platform. That code is open source, so our engineers can modify it when a deployment requires it, and AMI has built custom firmware with us on other platforms. The work so far centers on the Tioga Pass compute platform, where the team runs AMI’s MegaRAC OneTree Community Edition, an OpenBMC based stack AMI released in April 2026. On Tioga Pass, the team repaired code untouched for six years and added virtual KVM and virtual media. The same path is open for Bryce Canyon if a customer deployment calls for it.

RackRenew compute nodes run OpenBMC, pre-configured to customer specifications including network setup, power policy and boot order before shipment. Bryce Canyon ships with the stock OpenBMC firmware Meta published for the platform.

ScaleUp Technologies is a key deployment partner for RackRenew and hosts the OCP Experience Center in Nuremberg, the first facility in Europe where customers can test remanufactured OCP hardware in real data center and liquid-cooling environments before committing to a production deployment.
